In 2020 New Zealand Football created the Talent Development Programme (TDP), designed to aid player development at club level. The programme, for players aged 13 to 17, is run by clubs around the country, and has three core objectives:
1.Produce better footballers in Aotearoa New Zealand by increasing the number and quality of training opportunities
2.Provide clear training guidelines based on international best practice for youth footballers who are showing potential to play at a higher level
3.Create a clear aspiration pathway for youth footballers in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The North Wellington Football Club and the Onslow Junior Football Club teamed up in 2021 to create a Talent Development Programme (TDP). Both clubs wanted to deliver a pathway for our girls and boys into football opportunities and enable them to develop their technical, tactical, physical and mental skills, whilst getting a greater understanding of the game at a higher level.
To develop footballers to have a great understanding of the game, and the ability to follow tactics and execute game plans to the desired level.
There are five TDP squads: U13 mixed, U14 girls, U15 mixed, U16 girls and U17 mixed. Depending on numbers, there may be more than one team in each grade, with one team playing in the Capital Development League (CDL) and one in the Regional League.
The North Wellington Football Club’s Director of Football oversees the Programme and works closely with its coaches to deliver a consistent programme that develops players’ understanding of the game. The Director of Football also works with the Onslow-North Wellington TDP Governance Committee to ensure adherence to the TDP requirements, see the New Zealand Football TDP Manual for more
All head coaches have a New Zealand Football ‘C’ licence, and all teams have both a head coach and an assistant coach. Teams also have a team manager, to assist with the administration and provision of kit.
The training component of the Programme runs from February to November. Participants can expect to participate in three sessions per week during this time; which will include two “on turf” sessions and one other varying in nature (video analysis, gym session, lectures, pool sessions).Players will get breaks for the first week of each of the school holidays.
Within the programme we have fully managed and planned Strength and Conditioning Programme focusing on both physical and wellbeing development and being tailored to each team in both the mixed and girl’s spaces
The competitions run from the end of April through to the beginning of September, with teams playing others from around the lower North Island region. Games can be played anywhere around the region, as far north as Palmerston North and Upper Hutt and as far south as Island Bay. Once the main competitions are over, tournaments may be entered into that involve travel further afield. For example: Napier, Christchurch, Auckland.
NZ Football has identified four phases for players learning the game:
The TDP sits within the game training phase, which is designed to enable players to learn how to use the core skills they developed in the skill acquisition phase, and play the game within the structure of 11 v 11. This will help to prepare them for the performance phase when they reach senior football.
The curriculum focuses on the four ‘main moments’ in the game: attacking, transitioning to defend, defending and transitioning to attack. Players develop an understanding of the key principles, team tasks and player tasks within all four main moments, as well as consistently improving the core skills within the team setting.
To develop confident and creative players, as well as create an attacking and effective style of football, the greater emphasis is put on the attacking main moment. The transition moments are incorporated in attacking and defending sessions so the players can understand the link between the main moments. Although defending is not prioritised in the ‘Game Training’ phase, it is still covered in detail.
Whilst we focus on development, we will provide the most appropriate competitive game-day experience for players. The focus at all our training sessions is to create a positive learning environment. This takes away players’ fears of making a mistake, and instead invites proactivity and willingness to try new skills. Our training sessions are player-centred, where questions are welcomed and opinions respected. The training is based around four main areas of player development: technical, tactical, physical and mental. The areas of development are prioritised according to players’ development stages, e.g. technical aspects are prioritised over tactical in the early stages of development. The sessions are also designed to simulate what players will face in the game. They are challenging with clear player and team tasks incorporated, as well as having a degree of opposition to overcome in order to achieve set tasks.
The coaching philosophy is to give a player in possession of the ball, responsibility to decide based on what he/she sees rather than what he/ she hears. This philosophy encourages continuous work on vision and awareness, gives players freedom to decide without instructions, and enhances cognitive learning. Our coaches pay great attention to details and do not move on from one technical aspect to another until a high level of competence is achieved.
Once committed to the Programme, players will be liable for the annual fee, which will be invoiced three times a year. Every January players will be asked if they are returning, and at the same time will get confirmation of that year’s fees. The fees cover Technical Programme Management, Coaching, Strength and Conditioning programme, 3 contact sessions per week, Capital Football fees for the programme and competitions, WCC fees for turf, access to gym, playing kit and equipment, video analysis (as per availability), team photos and all general and administrative expenses
The Onslow | North Wellington TDP Governance Committee set the fees each year, and is always committed to providing a high-quality programme at the lowest cost possible.
If you are a 12-year old boy or girl, you can trial for the U13 TDP squad. If you are a 13-year old girl, you can trial for the U14 girls’ TDP squad. These trials take place November-December each year, for the next year’s competition. Our commitment to long-term development is a multi-year one. Your eligibility to stay within the programme remains whilst you meet the programme requirements and pay the fees, there are no trials for existing players to re-enter the following year.
If you are older or are joining the Onslow-North Wellington TDP for the first time, you can apply to be considered. You will be assessed likely in the February before that year’s season begins. If you are successful, then again, you stay in the Programme until you are 17 years old.
